Bugs & Stuff

Please use this section to post about any bugs or oddities you might find :3 I'll do my best to fix what I can, but sometimes it might not be possible, as if I can't reproduce the issue on my end, I stand virtually no chance of fixing it T_T There are also some minor glitches and such that occur within Naninovel itself that I, sadly, can't do anything about.

I also can't fix things on Mac & Linux, as I don't own either system, so have no way of testing those versions :(

When listing what happened, please let me know the following:

  • Which version you were playing when it happened? (Windows/Mac/Linux)

  • What happened? (please be as descriptive as possible - include screenshots if you can)

  • What was the line of text that played before/after the bug?

  • Were you using skip mode?

  • Had you recently used the command console to issue any commands?

  • How old is your system?

Things I'm already aware of.

These are things I already know about and either cannot fix because they're a bug with Naninovel itself, or tiny issues I will fix in the full game release.

When loading a save, sometimes the game displays the wrong background

How to fix yourself in-game:

Rewind 1 line of text OR reload the save again. The correct background should then be displayed.

This is a weird bug with Naninovel's save/load system that I have noticed randomly in games I've made with Nani since Bitter/Sweet. I've updated several versions of Nani since then, but the bug still seems to be in there >.< It's almost impossible to replicate because it seems to occur randomly for different people, and not at all for others!

I came across it while testing a build of LOVESTARVED and was able to consistently replicate it, but unable to do anything about it :( But when I had to export a brand new build after fixing some other issues, I could no longer replicate it the same way in the new build.

I am currently 1 version behind the latest version of Naninovel, so maybe it's been fixed in the most recent release (fingers crossed x3) However, I don't think I will be able to update LOVESTARVED's project files to the latest version of Nani because there are A LOT of breaking changes in the new version that would require remaking all of the UI, among other things T_T

It's not the worst bug in the world since you can fix it yourself while playing, but still, it's frustrating, haha.

Slow loading times on older systems

Sadly, I don't think there's anything I can do to fix this :( Everything runs pretty fast on the PC I made it on, but I tested it on the family potato laptop, and it takes quite some time whenever the game reaches a loading screen, especially when loading or backing out of the music player >.< I have no idea why because Ren'Py games tend to run pretty smoothly on the potato, yet Unity ones always have horrific load time for me.

When I next update the game, I'll add some extra loading screens to account for this, as currently, if you're on a struggling system, when you back out of the extras menu, it just looks like the game is frozen even though it isn't... it's just taking a hell of a long time to load >.<

A BGM is playing quietly at the same time as a louder BGM

How to fix yourself in-game:

Make a save, then load that save. The correct BGM should now be playing without the other one in the background.

Again, this is something that doesn't happen often, but, unfortunately, isn't something I can fix :( It seems to occur when manually scrolling through text fast and a BGM track is set to fade out. The fade will apply to the BGM, but instead of ending playing once the fade finishes, it continues to play at super low volume underneath the louder BGM that's supposed to be playing.

This technically shouldn't happen because, in the code, I have written commands to stop the BGM, not only after fading out but again at the end of a text line to account for anyone using skip mode of scrolling fast through text. I have literally no idea why it seems that Nani sometimes ignores the stop BGM command >.<

Spelling/Grammar/Typos

So it's kind of inevitable that there will be some of these errors in there, haha. It doesn't matter how much testing I do, you just end up becoming blind to typos in the end cos you've seen the text so much >.<

I know for sure there is 1 line where I've, for some unknown reason, written the text as 2 separate sentences when I should have used a comma rather than a full stop x3 I would fix it, but because of the jam deadline and it being such a minor thing, I've noted it down as something to edit for the full game release, haha.

There are some commas that are added in places where you wouldn't normally have them, and some missing from places you would normally put them. That's just because it makes certain lines of dialogue easier to read in the way I intended them to be read x3
